My name is Gerry Ogilvie and I run a Social Enterprise in Falkirk, Scotland where we dedicate our services to helping disadvantaged children and families. My background is in children's television and I used to appear singing and playing guitar on pre school programmes at Granada Television in Manchester. The show was called 'Songbook' and was on the ITV network with over 2 million viewers. I also got to eat lunch with the cast of Coronation Street which was amazing. I also did twenty years as entertainment's manager at holiday resorts all over the country. I have appeared in shows and pantomimes all over the UK with top names and was also lucky to make a record at that time which hit the charts.
Now, as a social enterprise, we promote children’s literacy and all the benefits it can bring to a child’s future. Almost half of children are leaving primary school unable to read and write to the required standards, new government tables show.
I do many enterprise talks in schools for the charity Founders4Schools. Anything which brings additional help with creative writing, reading, storytelling and literacy for children has to be a good thing. I have been planning this writing project for over a year and we have several enterprise supporters. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also sent us a wonderful email thanking us for our services to children and families.
Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success regardless of their family circumstances.
Parents reading with their child for as little as 10 minutes a day can make a significant difference to the child’s achievement levels.
As the years unfold, many of those kids will never catch up if they don't receive the help they deserve.
Two main reasons that made me want to launch this writing project are, that many children are excluded from participating in attending parties, events and receiving books because of poverty and social circumstances. Imagine being the child who is never allowed to go to a party.
I have also seen several schools still using books from the early 1980’s with content not always relevant to a child of today. Many of these books have torn pages and are generally in bad condition.
We created ‘Kidz Write For Kidz’ and the whole idea is for children to write stories to be read and used by other children. We will choose as many stories as possible to be made into a professional book for the child’s school. It’s all FREE. We rely on receiving funding and support to continue this very worthwhile project.

We are also helping children in a small village in Africa. They love to learn but they have almost no facilities. Not even electricity. Despite this they are always smiling and are keen to be creative. They love to read, write and find their path in life.
Those kids in Africa are not the only ones who need a helping hand. Far from it. Here in the UK children have many challenging situations and can easily end up excluded from social activities.
We help by welcoming ALL children to our FUN PARTY SHOWS where they have a terrific time with our Puppets - Disco - Magic Show - Songs - Science - Games - Prizes - Go Kart Races and much more.
And of course BOOKS. We show kids how much fun BOOKS can be too !
